Why HBAR

An HBAR transfer costs about $0.0001, priced in US dollars, and is final within seconds. This is why SentX runs on HBAR, including the part that is still unfinished.

HBAR is the native coin of Hedera, a public ledger built for high volumes of small, fast transactions. Every Hedera transaction pays its network fee in HBAR, and HBAR staked to network nodes helps secure the ledger.

SentX prices NFTs, launches and AI generations in HBAR. This page is the reasoning behind that choice, including the part Hedera has not finished yet: post-quantum signatures.

Fees you can predict

Hedera sets its network fees in US dollars and charges the equivalent amount in HBAR at the network exchange rate. A busy hour does not turn a cent into a dollar, because there is no fee auction where users outbid each other for block space.

OperationPublished USD fee
Transfer HBAR between accountsAbout $0.0001
Transfer a token or an NFTAbout $0.001
Submit a message to a consensus topicAbout $0.0008

These are the base fees Hedera publishes. Signatures, memo size and custom token fees can change the total, and Hedera can update the schedule. Check the current fee table before you budget. An application such as SentX can also charge for its own service, and shows that price before you approve.

Final in seconds

Hedera reaches consensus with the hashgraph algorithm. Once a transaction reaches consensus, typically within a few seconds, it is final. There are no forks, no reorganizations and no need to wait for extra confirmations before treating a payment as settled.

Hashgraph is asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerant (aBFT): the network agrees on order even if some nodes are malicious and messages are delayed, as long as more than two thirds of the stake is honest.

Built for the post-quantum switch

Hedera hashes its records with SHA-384, a function that keeps a wide safety margin even against quantum computers. Account signatures use Ed25519 or ECDSA keys, which a large quantum computer could one day break, as it could for almost every blockchain today.

The difference is what happens next. A Hedera account ID is not derived from its public key, so the key can be replaced while the account, its balance and its NFTs stay exactly where they are. Is HBAR quantum resistant? walks through the cryptography layer by layer.

Payments made by AI agents

AI agents pay in small amounts, many times a day, with no person there to approve each charge. That needs a fee that is a fraction of the payment, settlement the agent can confirm in seconds, and limits a person sets once in advance.

Hedera offers all three: fixed sub cent fees, fast finality, and allowances and threshold keys that cap what an agent key can spend. Why AI agents pay with HBAR covers the tools and the safeguards.

Governance and open source

Hedera is governed by the Hedera Council, a group of up to 39 organizations from different industries and regions, each with an equal vote and a term of three years, renewable once. No single company controls the network's decisions.

The Hedera codebase was contributed to the Linux Foundation in 2024 as the open source project Hiero, so anyone can read, audit and build on the software that runs the ledger. Read about the Hedera Council.

Standards and institutions

HBAR often appears on lists of "ISO 20022 coins". ISO 20022 is a messaging standard for banks and payment systems, not a certificate a coin can hold. What matters is whether a network can carry the rich payment data institutions exchange, and settle fast enough to be worth connecting to.

HBAR and ISO 20022 explains what the standard covers, what "compliant" can and cannot mean, and where Hedera fits.

Using HBAR on SentX

On SentX, listing prices, offers, auction bids and launch prices are in HBAR unless another payment token is shown. Your wallet shows the HBAR amount and the network fee before you approve, and ownership changes when the transaction reaches consensus.

Common questions

What is HBAR used for?

HBAR pays network fees for every Hedera transaction, secures the network through staking, and moves value between accounts. Applications use it for payments, NFT trades and service fees.

Is HBAR the same as Hedera?

No. Hedera is the network. HBAR is the network's native coin, used to pay for and secure it.

Why are Hedera fees so low and stable?

Fees are set in US dollars by a published schedule rather than by an auction for block space, and the network processes transactions in seconds, so there is no queue for users to outbid.

Is HBAR a good investment?

This page explains how the network works and is not financial advice. The price of HBAR moves with the market, and you can lose money holding any cryptocurrency.
