Hedera NFT Token Keys: Supply, Metadata and Admin

Token keys control particular operations on a Hedera collection. They are part of the token configuration. They are different from the recovery phrase used to restore your wallet.

The keys most creators need to understand

Key	Why it matters
Supply	Authorizes minting and other supply operations under Hedera's rules
Metadata	Authorizes supported NFT metadata updates
Admin	Controls supported changes to token configuration
Fee schedule	Controls supported changes to the collection's custom fees

Other keys govern operations such as freezing or pausing where configured. Read their descriptions and decide whether the project needs those controls. Do not enable authority simply because a checkbox exists.

Minting needs supply authority

A supply key omitted when the token is created cannot simply be added later to make the collection mintable. Keep this in mind before finalizing a collection intended to mint NFTs.

Updating artwork needs the right authority

Metadata updates have their own authorization rules. A metadata key can support changes after distribution; supply-key updates have ownership conditions. Removing one key is not a reliable shortcut for declaring every part of a collection immutable.

Read the metadata update guide before promising that a collection can, or can never, change.

Existing keys and missing keys are different cases

Hedera supports changes to existing keys under the required authorization. That does not mean any missing key can be introduced later. Read the rule for the particular field in Hedera's token update documentation.

Keep an accurate record of who controls the required signing authority. A creator-tool login, NFT ownership and token-key control are not interchangeable.

Review the long-term plan

Before creating the collection, decide whether more NFTs will be minted, whether metadata will change and who can authorize those actions. Explain relevant capabilities to collectors in ordinary language.

Do not paste a wallet recovery phrase into a collection import or support message. If a tool requests a token key, confirm exactly which key and why before providing it.
