When we die, some say our souls journey through the lands of the dead. One such land is Mictlan, made up of nine levels with a dark lord who rules supreme. His power comes from the souls that reside there.

Once a year, a portal opens between the land of the living and the dead on the Day of the Dead. Many put up photos of their loved ones and make offerings on that day, hoping that the dead will find their way home for one more night. On that night, the portal calls all souls to it by emitting a brilliant orange light. When the day is over, all souls are called back to Mictlan and the glow of the portal fades away.

Even though this day renders him nearly powerless, the lord of Mictlan has no choice and cannot stop this as Death is above his power and this day is her gift to the dead. Her name is La Muerte, the overseer of all matters pertaining to death and all lands of the dead.

The lord of Mictlan’s power has steadily grown as more souls have been entering his realm. Through the passage of time and his increased power he has developed a poisoned mind. He has begun to engage in cruel acts against those living in his land and this could not go on. La Muerte decided it was time to intervene.

Her plan was set in motion by holding the portal between lands open past the day of the dead. A group of 10,000 wandering souls noticed that the portal light did not fade as it normally would after the day was over. These souls took their chance and turned back to the land of the living.

Lord Mictlan quickly became aware and in response sent his beasts to capture these… Fugitives. His beasts were terrifying and powerful constructs willing to serve their lord in any capacity. When the beasts reached the portal, they encountered a barricade that slowed them down. They managed to break through and met heavy resistance as a small army of fugitives were waiting on the other side, weapons ready. Lord Mictlan had underestimated the fugitives' resolve.

They fought ferociously, and though they suffered great losses, their tenacity led to victory. In that battle there were 8,088 lost with only 1,912 surviving. This battle has since become known as The Great Burn.

This is how the Lost Fugitives came to be.
